Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us, Shu'bah told us, from Ya'la ibn Ata' ibn al-Walid ibn Abi Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Idris al-Abdi or al-Khawlani, who said: I sat in a gathering with twenty of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and among them was a young man, fresh in years, handsome-faced, with dark wide eyes and gleaming front teeth. Whenever they disagreed about something and he stated an opinion, they would settle on his opinion. It turned out he was Mu'adh ibn Jabal. The next day I came and found him praying by a pillar. He said: He cut short his prayer, then sat cross-legged and fell silent. I said: By Allah, I love you for the majesty of Allah. He said: By Allah? I said: By Allah. He said: Indeed, among those who love one another for the sake of Allah — I think he said — will be in the shade of Allah on the day when there is no shade but His shade — and then there is no doubt about the rest of the hadith — a couch of light will be placed for them, which the Prophets, the truthful ones, and the martyrs will envy them for, on account of their position with the Lord, Mighty and Majestic. He said: I narrated this to Ubadah ibn al-Samit, and he said: I will only tell you what I heard from the tongue of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: My love is assured for those who love one another for My sake, and it is assured for those who give to one another for My sake, and My love is assured for those who are sincere with one another for My sake and those who maintain ties for My sake (Shu'bah was uncertain whether it was 'those who maintain ties' or 'those who visit one another').
