Zakariyya ibn Adi told us, Ubaydullah ibn Amr — namely al-Raqqi — told us, from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysah, Jabalah ibn Suhaym told us, from Abu al-Muthanna al-Abdi, who said: I heard al-Sadusi — namely Ibn al-Khasasiyyah — say: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to give him my allegiance. He said: He stipulated for me the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, that I establish prayer, pay zakah, perform the pilgrimage of Islam, fast the month of Ramadan, and strive in the way of Allah. I said: O Messenger of Allah, as for two of these, by Allah I cannot bear them: jihad and charity. For they claim that whoever turns his back and flees has incurred the wrath of Allah, and I fear that if I am present my soul will become greedy for life and hate death. As for charity, by Allah I have nothing but a small flock and ten camels which are the milch-animals and pack-animals of my family. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, withdrew his hand, then moved his hand, then said: Then no jihad and no charity — so how will you enter Paradise? He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I will give you my allegiance. He said: So I gave him my allegiance on all of these conditions.
