Muhammad ibn Yazid told us: Sufyan ibn Husayn informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: 'Fruit is not to be sold for dried dates, and fruit is not to be sold until its ripeness becomes apparent.' He said: Then Zayd ibn Thabit met Abdullah ibn Umar and said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, granted a concession regarding ariyyah.' Sufyan said: 'Ariyyah are palm trees that used to be given as gifts to the poor, who could not wait for the fruit to ripen, so they would sell them for whatever fruit they wished.'
