Abdullah told us, Hudbah ibn Khalid told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Humayd, from al-Hasan, from Utayy, who said: I saw an old man in Medina speaking, so I asked about him, and they said, "This is Ubayy ibn Ka'b." He said: When death approached Adam, upon him be peace, he said to his sons, "O my sons, I crave some of the fruits of Paradise." So they went to seek it for him, and the angels met them, bearing with them his shrouds, his embalming perfume, the axes, the spades, and the baskets. They said to them, "O sons of Adam, what do you want, and what are you seeking?" — or, "what do you want, and where are you going?" They said, "Our father is ill and craves some of the fruits of Paradise." They said to them, "Go back, for your father's decree has already been decided." So they came back, and when Eve saw them she recognized them and took refuge with Adam. He said, "Away from me, away from me, for I was only afflicted because of you; leave me and the angels of my Lord, blessed and exalted is He, to ourselves." So they took his soul, washed him, shrouded him, embalmed him, dug a grave for him, made a niche for him, and prayed over him. Then they went down into his grave and laid him in it and placed bricks over him. Then they came out of the grave and cast the earth over him. Then they said, "O sons of Adam, this is your practice."
