'Abdullah said: Abu Ma'mar told me, Abu Usamah told us, from 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja'far, from al-'Ala' ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Shall I not teach you a chapter the like of which has not been revealed in the Torah, nor the Psalms, nor the Gospel, nor the Qur'an?" I said: "Yes indeed." He said: "I hope I will not leave through that door until you have learned it." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, got up, and I got up with him, and he took my hand and began speaking to me until we neared the door. I recalled and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the chapter you mentioned to me..." He said: "How do you recite when you stand to pray?" So I recited the Opening of the Book. He said: "It is that; it is the seven oft-repeated verses, and the magnificent Qur'an which I was given afterward." 'Abdullah said: I asked my father about al-'Ala' ibn 'Abd al-Rahman and Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, and he preferred al-'Ala' over Suhayl, and said: "I have not heard anyone speak ill of al-'Ala'." Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: "And Abu Salih is more beloved to me than al-'Ala'."
