Abu al-Nadr Hashim b. al-Qasim narrated to us: al-Hashraj b. Nubata al-Qaysi al-Kufi narrated to us: Sa'id b. Jumhan narrated to me: 'Ubaydullah b. Abi Bakra narrated to us: my father narrated to me in this mosque — meaning the mosque of Basra — saying: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A group of my nation shall surely settle a land called al-Basra; their numbers there will grow abundant, and their palm trees will grow abundant there; then Banu Qanturaa' will come, broad-faced, small-eyed, until they settle upon a bridge of theirs called Dijla. The Muslims will split into three groups: one group will take hold of the tails of the camels and join the desert, and they perished; one group will take matters into their own hands and disbelieved — so this one and that one are equal; and one group will place their dependents behind their backs and fight, so their slain are martyrs, and God will grant victory to the rest of them." Surayj narrated to us: Hashraj narrated to us, from Sa'id, from 'Abdullah or 'Ubaydullah b. Abi Bakra, who said: My father narrated to me in this mosque — meaning the mosque of Basra — and he related the like of it.
