Bahz ibn Hakim ibn Mu'awiya narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seized some people of my tribe on suspicion and imprisoned them. A man of my tribe came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering a sermon, and said, "O Muhammad, why do you imprison my neighbors?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent toward him, then said, "Some people are saying that you forbid evil while committing it in private." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What is he saying?" He said: So I began to turn the conversation between them aside with words, fearing that he would hear it and invoke against my tribe a curse after which they would never prosper again. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept at him until he understood it, and said, "They have indeed said it, or one of them has said it. By Allah, if I had done that, it would be against me, not against them. Release his neighbors for him."
