Ismail narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu al-Muhallab, from Imran ibn Husayn, who said: Thaqif were allies of Banu Uqayl. Thaqif captured two men from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) captured a man from Banu Uqayl, and al-Adba was taken with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to him while he was bound and said: 'O Muhammad! O Muhammad!' He said: 'What is the matter with you?' He said: 'Why did you take me? Why did you take the fastest camel of the pilgrims?' — showing great indignation. He said: 'I took you for the crimes of your allies, Thaqif.' Then he turned away. The man called: 'O Muhammad! O Muhammad!' — and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was merciful and gentle — so he came to him and said: 'What is the matter?' He said: 'I am a Muslim.' He said: 'Had you said that when you were in control of your affair, you would have succeeded completely.' Then he turned away, and the man called: 'O Muhammad! O Muhammad!' He came to him and said: 'What is the matter?' He said: 'I am hungry, so feed me; I am thirsty, so give me drink.' He said: 'This is your need.' He was ransomed in exchange for the two men. A woman from the Ansar was captured and al-Adba was taken with her. The woman was bound, but one night she broke free. She came to the camels, and every time she approached one, it bellowed. She kept going until she reached al-Adba, which did not bellow — it was a well-trained camel. She sat on its back, urged it on, and set off. They noticed her and pursued her, but she outran them. She vowed that if Allah, Blessed and Exalted, saved her on it, she would slaughter it. When she arrived in Madinah, the people saw her and said: 'Al-Adba — the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)!' She said: 'I vowed that if Allah, Blessed and Exalted, saved me on it, I would slaughter it.' They came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and told him. He said: 'Glory be to Allah! What a terrible way to repay it — if Allah, Blessed and Exalted, saved her on it, she would slaughter it! There is no fulfillment of a vow made in disobedience to Allah, and no vow in what a servant does not own.'
