Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us, Said narrated to us, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, that Hayyaj ibn Imran came to Imran ibn Husayn and said: 'My father has vowed that if he catches his slave, he will cut off a limb of his or cut off his hand.' He said: 'Tell your father to expiate for his oath and not to cut off any limb, for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to urge charity in his sermons and forbid mutilation.' Then he went to Samurah ibn Jundub, who told him the same thing.
