Hasan ibn Musa - meaning al-Ashyab - told us: Sukayn ibn Abd al-Aziz told us: Yazid al-A'raj informed us - Abdullah said, meaning I think it is al-Shanni - Hamzah ibn Ali ibn Makhfar told us, from Abu Burdah, from Abu Musa, who said: We went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on one of his journeys. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made camp for the night with us, and I went in the latter part of the night to the resting place of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seeking him, but I did not find him. He said: So I went out into the open seeking him, and there was a man from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seeking what I was seeking. He said: While we were like that, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned toward us. He said: We said, "O Messenger of Allah, you are in enemy territory, and we are not secure for you; if only, when the need arose for you, you had said so to one of your companions, and he would have gone with you." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I heard a rumbling like the rumbling of a millstone, or a hum like the hum of bees, and one who came to me from my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, came to me." He said: "He gave me the choice between half of my community entering Paradise, and my intercession for them, so I chose my intercession for them, knowing that it would be more encompassing for them. Then he gave me the choice between a third of my community entering Paradise, and intercession for them, so I chose my intercession for them, knowing that it would be more encompassing for them." So they said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah the Exalted to make us among the people of your intercession." He said: So he prayed for them. Then the two of them woke up the companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told them what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had said. He said: So they began to come to him and say, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah the Exalted to make us among the people of your intercession," and he would pray for them. He said: When the people pressed him persistently and became numerous, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "It is for whoever dies bearing witness that there is no god but Allah."
