Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us: Jarir, meaning Ibn Hazim, narrated to us, from Asim al-Ahwal, from Amir, from Adi ibn Hatim, who said: I said, "O Prophet of Allah, we are people of hunting." He said, "When one of you shoots his arrow, let him mention the name of Allah, the Exalted; if it kills, let him eat; but if it falls into water and he finds it dead, let him not eat it, for he does not know — perhaps the water killed it. If he finds his arrow in the game after a day or two, and finds no trace in it other than his arrow, then if he wishes, let him eat it." He said, "And if he releases his dog upon it, let him mention the name of Allah, Mighty and Sublime; if he catches up with it and finds it has killed it, let him eat; but if it has eaten from it, let him not eat, for it caught it only for itself, not for him. And if he releases his dog and it mixes with other dogs over which the name of Allah was not mentioned, let him not eat, for he does not know which of them killed it." Hasan narrated to us: Jarir narrated to us, from Muhammad, from Abu Ubaydah ibn Hudhayfah, that a man said: I said, "I ask about the hadith of Adi ibn Hatim while I am in a part of Kufa — why should I not be the one who hears it myself?" So I went to him and said, "Do you know me?" He said, "Yes," and related the hadith, saying in it: "Are you not a Rakusi?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Are you not the chief of your people?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Do you not take the mirba’?" I said, "Yes." He said, "That is not lawful for you in your religion." He said: So my soul was humbled, and he related the hadith.
