Ali ibn Abdullah told us, Yahya ibn Sa'id told us, Jabir ibn Subh told us, he said: al-Muthanna ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Khuza'i told me - and I accompanied him to Wasit - and he used to mention the name of Allah at the start of his food, and at the last morsel he would say, "In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end." So I said to him, "You mention the name of Allah at the start of what you eat - what do you think of your saying at the end of what you eat, 'In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end'?" He said, "I will tell you about that. My grandfather Umayyah ibn Makhshi, who was one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, I heard him say: A man was eating while the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was watching, and he did not mention the name of Allah until, at the last of his food, there remained one morsel, and he said, 'In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end.' So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'The devil kept eating with him the whole time, until he mentioned the name of Allah, whereupon nothing remained in his stomach but that he (the devil) vomited it up.'"
