Abdullah ibn Muhammad told us - Abdullah said: and I myself heard it from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Shayba - Marwan ibn Mu'awiya al-Fazari told us, from Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ta'ifi, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Khalid al-Adwani, from his father, that he saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the eastern quarter of Thaqif, standing leaning on a bow or a staff, when he came to them seeking support from them. He said: I heard him recite "By the sky and the night-comer" until he finished it. He said: I memorized it during the Age of Ignorance while I was a polytheist, then I recited it again after Islam. He said: Then Thaqif summoned me and said, "What did you hear from this man?" So I recited it to them, and those of Quraysh who were with them said, "We know our companion better than you; if we knew that what he says is true, we would have followed him."
