حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ الْأَعْمَشُ حَدَّثَنَا شَقِيقٌ قَالَ كُنْتُ قَاعِدًا مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا لَمْ يَجِدْ الْمَاءَ لَمْ يُصَلِّ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَا فَقَالَ أَبُو مُوسَى أَمَا تَذْكُرُ إِذْ قَالَ عَمَّارٌ لِعُمَرَ أَلَا تَذْكُرُ إِذْ بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِيَّاكَ فِي إِبِلٍ فَأَصَابَتْنِي جَنَابَةٌ فَتَمَرَّغْتُ فِي التُّرَابِ فَلَمَّا رَجَعْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَخْبَرْتُهُ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَكْفِيكَ أَنْ تَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَضَرَبَ بِكَفَّيْهِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ كَفَّيْهِ جَمِيعًا وَمَسَحَ وَجْهَهُ مَسْحَةً وَاحِدَةً بِضَرْبَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لَا جَرَمَ مَا رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ قَنَعَ بِذَلِكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو مُوسَى فَكَيْفَ بِهَذِهِ الْآيَةِ فِي سُورَةِ النِّسَاءِ { فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا } قَالَ فَمَا دَرَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ مَا يَقُولُ وَقَالَ لَوْ رَخَّصْنَا لَهُمْ فِي التَّيَمُّمِ لَأَوْشَكَ أَحَدُهُمْ إِنْ بَرَدَ الْمَاءُ عَلَى جِلْدِهِ أَنْ يَتَيَمَّمَ قَالَ عَفَّانُ وَأَنْكَرَهُ يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدٍ فَسَأَلْتُ حَفْصَ بْنَ غِيَاثٍ فَقَالَ كَانَ الْأَعْمَشُ يُحَدِّثُنَا بِهِ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ وَذَكَرَ أَبَا وَائِلٍ.

Affan narrated to us: Abdul-Wahid narrated to us: Sulayman al-A'mash narrated to us: Shaqiq narrated to us, who said: I was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, and Abu Musa said to Abdullah: If a man does not find water, should he not pray? Abdullah said: No. Abu Musa said: Do you not remember when Ammar said to Umar - do you not remember when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me and you among some camels, and I became junub, and I rolled myself in the dust, and when I returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, I told him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, laughed and said: It would only have sufficed you to do thus - and he struck the ground with his palms, then wiped his palms together and wiped his face with a single wipe with a single strike. Abdullah said: There is no doubt that I never saw Umar satisfied with that. Abu Musa said to him: Then what about this verse in Surat an-Nisa: {and if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth}? Abdullah did not know what to say, and said: If we granted them this concession in tayammum, one of them would soon resort to tayammum as soon as the water felt cold on his skin. Affan said: Yahya, that is, Ibn Sa'id, denied this, so I asked Hafs ibn Ghiyath, and he said: Al-A'mash used to narrate it to us from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, and he mentioned Abu Wa'il.
