Isma'il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Awf narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qamus Zayd ibn Ali narrated to me, saying: One of the delegation who came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from Abd al-Qays narrated to me, saying: Among the gifts we presented to him was a bundle, or a skin, of ta'dud dates or barni dates. He said: 'What is this?' We said: 'This is a gift.' He said: And I think he looked at one of the dates from it, then put it back in its place, and said: 'Convey it to the family of Muhammad.' He said: Then the people asked him about various things, until they asked him about drink. He said: 'Do not drink from a gourd vessel, nor a green jar, nor a hollowed-out tree trunk, nor a pitch-lined vessel; drink from the permitted skin vessel tied at its mouth.' One of us said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, how do you know what the gourd, the green jar, the hollowed trunk, and the pitch-lined vessel are?' He said: 'I do not know what it is — which town of Hajar is mightiest?' We said: 'al-Mushaqqar.' He said: 'By Allah, I have indeed entered it and taken its key.' He said: And I had forgotten part of his account, but Ubaydullah ibn Abi Jarwah reminded me of it. He said: 'I stood at the spring of al-Zarah,' then he said: 'O Allah, forgive Abd al-Qays, since they accepted Islam willingly, not unwillingly, neither disgraced nor deprived, whereas some of our own people do not accept Islam until they are disgraced and deprived.' He said: And he turned his face fervently from here — meaning to the right of the qiblah — until he faced the qiblah, then supplicated for Abd al-Qays, then said: 'Indeed the best of the people of the East are Abd al-Qays.' Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Awf narrated to us, from Abu al-Qamus, who said: One of the delegation who came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, narrated to me — and if it was not him, he said it was Qays ibn al-Nu'man, for I have forgotten his name — and he related the account, saying: And he turned fervently until he faced the qiblah, then supplicated for Abd al-Qays, then said: 'Indeed the best women among the people of the East are the women of Abd al-Qays.'
