حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي حُسَيْنٍ الْمَكِّيُّ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ الْكِنْدِيِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ أَشِيرُوا عَلَى النِّسَاءِ فِي أَنْفُسِهِنَّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّ الْبِكْرَ تَسْتَحِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الثَّيِّبُ تُعْرِبُ عَنْ نَفْسِهَا بِلِسَانِهَا وَالْبِكْرُ رِضَاهَا صَمْتُهَا حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُبَارَكٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا سَيْفُ بْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَدِيَّ بْنَ عَدِيٍّ الْكِنْدِيَّ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي مَوْلًى لَنَا أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدِّي يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَا يُعَذِّبُ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ.

Ali ibn Ayyash and Ishaq ibn Isa told us — and this is the wording of Ali — they said: Layth ibn Sa'd told us, he said: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Husayn al-Makki told me, from Adi ibn Adi al-Kindi, from his father, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: Consult women concerning themselves [in marriage]. They said: The virgin feels shy, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The previously-married woman expresses [her consent] for herself with her tongue, and the virgin's consent is her silence. Ahmad ibn al-Hajjaj told us, he said: Abdullah — meaning Ibn al-Mubarak — told us, he said: Sayf ibn Abi Sulayman informed us, he said: I heard Adi ibn Adi al-Kindi say: A freedman of ours told me that he heard my grandfather say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not punish... and he related the hadith.
