Waki' told us, Hisham ibn Sa'd told us, Qays ibn Bishr al-Taghlibi told me, from his father - who was a companion of Abu al-Darda' in Damascus - he said: There was in Damascus a man called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah, solitary, who scarcely spoke to anyone; he would only be found in prayer, and when he finished he would glorify Allah, proclaim His greatness, and declare His Oneness until he returned to his family. He said: He passed by us one day while we were with Abu al-Darda', and Abu al-Darda' said to him: A word from you that will benefit us and not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us out on a raiding party, and when we arrived, a man from among them sat in a gathering in which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was present, and said: O so-and-so, if only you had seen so-and-so thrust his spear, then said: Take that! I am the young man of Ghifar! What do you think? He said: I think his reward has been nullified. He said: They spoke about that until the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, heard their voices, and he said: Rather, he is to be praised and rewarded. He said: Abu al-Darda' was so delighted by that, that he nearly fell upon his knees, and he said: Did you hear it yourself, more than once? He said: Yes.
