Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Hamid, meaning Ibn Bahram, narrated to us, he said: Shahr ibn Hawshab said: Ibn Ghanm said: When we entered the mosque of al-Jabiya, I and Abu al-Darda', we met Ubada ibn al-Samit. He took my right hand with his left hand, and the left hand of Abu al-Darda' with his right hand, and he went out walking between us while we were speaking quietly - and Allah knows best what we were speaking quietly about - and that is what he said. Ubada ibn al-Samit said: If either of you two, or both of you, live long, you will soon see a man from among the great mass of the Muslims - meaning from its midst - who has recited the Qur'an according to the tongue of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and has repeated it and made it plain, and made lawful what is lawful in it, and forbidden what is forbidden in it, and settled at its rulings; or has recited it according to the tongue of his brother, a recitation according to the tongue of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and repeated it and made it plain, and made lawful what is lawful in it, and forbidden what is forbidden in it, and settled at its rulings - not turning away from among you except as the head of a dead donkey turns. He said: While we were like that, Shaddad ibn Aws and Awf ibn Malik appeared and sat with us. Shaddad said: The thing I fear most for you, O people, is what I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say concerning hidden desire and shirk. Ubada ibn al-Samit and Abu al-Darda' said: O Allah, forgiveness! Did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, not tell us that Satan has despaired of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula? As for hidden desire, we already know it - it is the desires of this world, its women and its pleasures. So what is this shirk that you frighten us with, O Shaddad? Shaddad said: What do you think - if you saw a man praying for the sake of a man, or fasting for his sake, or giving charity for his sake, would you consider that he has committed shirk? They said: Yes, by Allah, whoever prays for a man, or fasts for him, or gives charity for him, has indeed committed shirk. Shaddad said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever prays to show off has committed shirk, and whoever fasts to show off has committed shirk, and whoever gives charity to show off has committed shirk. Awf ibn Malik then said at that: Should he not then aim, in all of that deed, for that which was purely sought for His sake, and accept what was purely for Him, and abandon what was mixed with shirk? Shaddad then said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: I am the best of partners for one who associates a partner with Me. Whoever associates anything with Me, then the whole of his deed, its little and its much, goes to his partner whom he associated with Me, and I am free of need of it.
