Abd al-Rahman told us, from Sufyan, from Rabi'ah ibn Abi Abd al-Rahman, who said: Yazid, freedman of al-Munba'ith, told me, from Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani, who said: A bedouin came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with a lost item found, and he said: "Announce it publicly for a year, then note its wrapping and its tie-string; if someone comes and tells you (identifying details) about it, (give it to him); and otherwise, use it up (spend it, if money)." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about a lost sheep?" He said: "It is yours, your brother's, or the wolf's." He said: "O Messenger of Allah, a lost camel?" He said: The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, changed color, then he said: "What business is it of yours? It has its footwear and its water-store; it reaches water and eats from the trees."
