'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar narrated to us from al-Zuhri, who said: Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf narrated to me: that he heard Mu'awiya delivering a sermon in Medina, saying: 'O people of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: This is the Day of 'Ashura', and its fasting was not made obligatory upon us; so whoever among you wishes to fast it, let him fast, for I am fasting.' So the people fasted. Rawh narrated to us: Malik and Muhammad ibn Abi Hafsa narrated to us from Ibn Shihab from Humayd ibn 'Abd al-Rahman: that he heard Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan on the Day of 'Ashura, in the year he performed Hajj, while upon the pulpit, and he mentioned the hadith.
