He said: 'Abd al-Samad narrated to us, who said: 'Ikrimah narrated to us, who said: Iyas narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to me, who said: We arrived with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at al-Hudaybiyah, and we numbered fourteen hundred, and there were fifty sheep [worth of water in the well] that could not satisfy them. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sat on its edge, and either supplicated or spat into it, and it gushed forth, so we drank and drew water. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called for the pledge of allegiance at the base of the tree, and I gave him the pledge first among the people, and he continued taking the pledge, until when he was in the middle of the people, he said: "O Salamah, pledge to me." I said: "I have already pledged to you first among the people, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do it again, so pledge." He saw me without weapons, so he gave me a small round shield. Then he continued taking the pledge, until when he was at the end of the people, he said: "Will you not pledge to me?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have pledged first among the people, in the middle, and at the end." He said: "Do it again, so pledge." So I pledged to him. Then he said: "Where is your shield that I gave you?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, my uncle 'Amir met me without weapons, so I gave it to him." He said: "You are like the one who said: 'O Allah, grant me a beloved one dearer to me than myself,'" and he laughed. Then the polytheists sent us messages regarding a truce, until some of us walked to some of them. I was a follower of Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullah, tending his horse and watering it and eating from his food, having left my family and property, migrating to Allah and His Messenger. When we and the people of Makkah made peace and mixed with one another, I came to the tree and swept away its thorns and lay down in its shade. Four men from the people of Makkah came to me, and being polytheists, they began speaking ill of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so I moved away from them to another tree. They hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were like that, a caller called out from the bottom of the valley: "O people of the Emigrants! Ibn Zunaym has been killed!" So I drew my sword and attacked the four, taking their weapons and making them into a bundle. Then I said: "By the One who honored Muhammad, none of you shall raise his head without my striking his eye." Then I brought them, driving them, to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and my uncle 'Amir came with Ibn Mikraz, leading his horse, leading seventy [captives], until we had them halted. He looked at them and said: "Leave them; let them bear the first act of wrongdoing" - and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pardoned them, and [the verse] was revealed: "And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them." Then we returned to Madinah and stopped at a place called Lahy Jamal. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sought forgiveness for whoever climbed the mountain that night as a scout for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions - and I climbed it that night twice or three times. Then we arrived at Madinah, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent his baggage-camels with his servant boy Rabah, and I was with him, and I went out with Talhah's horse to let it graze near the camels on their pasture. When we reached morning, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Uyaynah al-Fazari had raided the Messenger of Allah's camels, driving them all off and killing their herdsman.
