قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ زَيْدٍ قَالَ لَمَّا أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالنَّاقُوسِ لِيُضْرَبَ بِهِ لِلنَّاسِ فِي الْجَمْعِ لِلصَّلَاةِ طَافَ بِي وَأَنَا نَائِمٌ رَجُلٌ يَحْمِلُ نَاقُوسًا فِي يَدِهِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَتَبِيعُ النَّاقُوسَ قَالَ مَا تَصْنَعُ بِهِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ نَدْعُو بِهِ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ قَالَ أَفَلَا أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ بَلَى قَالَ تَقُولُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَأْخَرَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ تَقُولُ إِذَا أُقِيمَتْ الصَّلَاةُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ قَدْ قَامَتْ الصَّلَاةُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا رَأَيْتُ فَقَالَ إِنَّهَا لَرُؤْيَا حَقٌّ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ فَقُمْ مَعَ بِلَالٍ فَأَلْقِ عَلَيْهِ مَا رَأَيْتَ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ بِهِ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْدَى صَوْتًا مِنْكَ قَالَ فَقُمْتُ مَعَ بِلَالٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أُلْقِيهِ عَلَيْهِ وَيُؤَذِّنُ بِهِ قَالَ فَسَمِعَ بِذَلِكَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَهُوَ فِي بَيْتِهِ فَخَرَجَ يَجُرُّ رِدَاءَهُ يَقُولُ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَ الَّذِي أُرِيَ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ.

He said: Ya'qub narrated to us, who said: my father narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith al-Taymi narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn 'Abd Rabbih, who said: 'Abdullah ibn Zayd narrated to me, saying: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that the clapper be struck to gather the people for prayer, someone came around me while I was asleep, a man carrying a clapper in his hand. I said to him: "O servant of Allah, will you sell the clapper?" He said: "What will you do with it?" I said: "We call to prayer with it." He said: "Shall I not show you something better than that?" I said to him: "Yes indeed." He said: "You say: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to prayer; come to success, come to success; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah." Then he stepped back a little, then he said: "You say, when the prayer is established: Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; come to prayer, come to success; the prayer has begun, the prayer has begun; Allah is greatest, Allah is greatest; there is no god but Allah." When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him what I had seen. He said: "It is indeed a true vision, if Allah wills. So get up with Bilal and teach him what you saw, and let him call the adhan with it, for his voice is more resonant than yours." He said: So I got up with Bilal and began teaching it to him, and he called the adhan with it. He said: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab heard of that while he was in his house, and he came out dragging his cloak, saying: "By the One who sent you with truth, I saw the same as what he was shown." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Then praise belongs to Allah."
