'Affan told us: Hammam told us: Qatadah informed us, from Mutarrif ibn 'Abd Allah, from his father, who said: I entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was reciting 'Rivalry in worldly increase distracts you, until you visit the graves.' He said: He says: The son of Adam says, 'My wealth, my wealth' — yet do you, O son of Adam, have of your wealth anything but what you ate and thus consumed, or wore and thus wore out, or gave in charity and thus made pass on? And Qatadah used to say: Any charity not yet taken possession of is nothing. Bahz told us: Hammam told us: Qatadah told us, from Mutarrif, from his father, that he entered upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and heard him say — and he mentioned the like of 'Affan's hadith, without mentioning Qatadah's remark.
