Attab ibn Ziyad told us, saying: Abdullah informed us, saying: Ibn Lahi'ah informed us, saying: Musa ibn Jubayr, freedman of Banu Salamah, told me that he heard Abdullah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik relate from his father, who said: In Ramadan, the people used to observe that if a man fasted, and then evening came and he slept, food, drink, and [intimacy with] women became forbidden to him until he broke his fast the next day. One night Umar ibn al-Khattab returned from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, having stayed up late with him, and found his wife had gone to sleep. He wanted her, but she said, "I have already gone to sleep." He said, "You have not gone to sleep," and then lay with her. And Ka'b ibn Malik did likewise. The next morning Umar went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him, so Allah, Exalted, revealed: "Allah knew that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you in mercy and pardoned you."
