Isma'il told us, saying: Ibn Awn informed us, from Umar ibn Kathir ibn Aflah, who said: Ka'b ibn Malik said: "I was never in any expedition with more ease of mount and provisions than in that expedition." He said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out, I said [to myself]: "I will prepare tomorrow and then catch up with him." So I began my preparations, but evening came and I had not finished. I said: "I will prepare my equipment tomorrow, the people are still near, then I will catch up with them." Evening came and I had not finished. When the third day came, I began my preparations, but evening came and I had not finished, so I said: "It is too late; the people have marched three days [ahead]," so I stayed behind. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned, the people began to make excuses to him. I came and stood before him and said: "I was never in any expedition with more ease of mount and provisions than in this expedition." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away from me, and ordered the people not to speak to us, and our wives were ordered to keep away from us. He said: One day I climbed over a wall, and there I found Jabir ibn Abdullah. I said: "O Jabir, I adjure you by Allah, do you know that I ever deceived Allah and His Messenger, even for a day?" He said: He remained silent toward me and would not speak to me. He said: Then one day, while I was in that state, I heard a man on the hill calling out, "Ka'b! Ka'b!" until he drew near me and said: "Give glad tidings to Ka'b!"
