al-Walid ibn Muslim told us: al-Awza'i told us: I heard Yahya ibn Abi Kathir say: Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn As'ad ibn Zurarah told me, from Qays ibn Sa'd, who said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, visited us at our home and said: 'Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.' Sa'd returned the greeting quietly. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned back, and Sa'd followed him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I used to hear your greeting and return it quietly so that you would give us more of your greetings.' So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went back with him, and Sa'd ordered water for washing to be brought for him, and it was set down, and he washed. Then he handed him - or they handed him - a wrap dyed with saffron and wars, and he wrapped himself in it. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his hands, saying: 'O Allah, place Your blessings and mercy upon the family of Sa'd ibn Ubadah.' Then he partook of the food. When he wished to depart, Sa'd brought forward a donkey which he had saddled with a soft cloth, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mounted it. Sa'd said: 'O Qays, accompany the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.'" Qays said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Ride.' But I refused. Then he said: 'Either you ride, or you go back.'" He said: "So I went back."
