Sulayman ibn Harb told us, Hammad ibn Zayd told us, from al-Hajjaj al-Sawwaf, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, that al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr al-Dawsi came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, would you like a strong, well-defended fortress?" There was a fortress belonging to Daws in the pre-Islamic era. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, declined that, for what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had reserved for the Ansar. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, emigrated to Medina, al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr emigrated to him, and a man from his people emigrated with him. They found the climate of Medina unsuitable, and the man fell ill and became distressed, so he took a sharp instrument and cut his finger joints with it, and his hands bled until he died. Al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr saw him in a dream, in a good state, but saw him covering his hand. He said to him, "What has your Lord done with you?" He said, "He forgave me for my emigration to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him." He said, "Then why do I see you covering your hand?" He said, "He said to me, 'We will not set right what you yourself corrupted.'" Al-Tufayl related this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "O Allah, forgive his two hands as well."
