Abdullah ibn al-Harith told us, Thawr ibn Yazid told me, from Sulayman ibn Musa, from Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about the time of prayer. He said: "Pray with me." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed the dawn prayer when the dawn broke, then prayed the noon prayer when the sun had passed its zenith, then prayed the afternoon prayer when the shadow of a man equaled his height, then prayed the sunset prayer when the sun had set, then prayed the night prayer when the twilight had disappeared. Then he prayed the dawn prayer when it had become light, then prayed the noon prayer when the shadow of a man equaled his height, then prayed the afternoon prayer when the shadow of a man was twice his height, then prayed the sunset prayer before the twilight disappeared, then prayed the night prayer - some said at a third of the night, and others said at half of it.
