Musa ibn Dawud told us, Ibn Lahi'ah told us, from Abu al-Zubayr, that he asked Jabir ibn 'Abdullah about the two testers of the grave. He said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "This nation is tried in its graves. When the believer is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, an angel of stern rebuke comes to him and says, 'What did you used to say about this man?' The believer says, 'I say he is the Messenger of Allah and His servant.' The angel says to him, 'Look at your seat which was to be in the Fire - Allah has saved you from it and replaced for you, in place of your seat which you see of the Fire, your seat which you see of Paradise.' So he sees them both, and the believer says, 'Let me go tell my family the good news,' but he is told, 'Be still.' As for the hypocrite, when his family turns away from him, he is made to sit, and it is said to him, 'What did you used to say about this man?' He says, 'I do not know - I used to say what the people said.' It is said to him, 'You neither knew nor followed guidance - this is your seat which was to be from Paradise, but it has been replaced in its place with your seat from the Fire.'" Jabir said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "Every servant will be raised in the grave in the state upon which he died - the believer upon his faith, and the hypocrite upon his hypocrisy."
