al-Walid ibn Muslim told us, al-Awza'i told us that he heard Yahya — and Waki' told us, Ali ibn al-Mubarak told us, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir — in essence: he said: I asked Abu Salamah, "Which part of the Qur'an was revealed first?" He said: "O you wrapped in your cloak." Yahya said: I said to Abu Salamah, "Or 'Read'?" He said: I asked Jabir which part of the Qur'an was revealed first, and he said: "O you wrapped in your cloak." I said, "Or 'Read'?" Jabir said: "I will tell you what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, told us." He said: "I secluded myself at Hira' for a month. When I completed my seclusion, I came down and went into the depth of the valley, and I was called out to. I looked in front of me, behind me, to my right, and to my left, and I saw no one. Then I was called again, and I looked and saw no one. Then I was called again" — al-Walid said in his narration: "I raised my head, and there he was, upon the Throne in the air, and a violent trembling seized me" — and both narrators said: "I came to Khadijah and said, 'Cover me, cover me.' So they covered me and poured water over me. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed: 'O you wrapped in your cloak! Arise and warn! And your Lord magnify! And your clothing purify!'" Affan told us, Aban al-Attar informed us, Yahya ibn Abi Kathir told us: he said: I asked Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, "Which part of the Qur'an was revealed first?" He said: "O you wrapped in your cloak," and he related the hadith, except that he said: "When I completed my seclusion, I came down and went into the depth of the valley, and I was called out to," and he related it also, saying: "I looked above me, and there he was, seated upon a throne between heaven and earth, and I was terrified by it. So I came to Khadijah's house and said, 'Cover me,'" and he related the hadith.
