Abd al-Rahman told us, Malik told us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir: I heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say: A bedouin came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. Then he fell ill with fever, so he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "Release me from my pledge." He refused. Then he came again and said, "Release me," and he refused. Then he asked about him, and they said he had left. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Medina is like a furnace-bellows; it expels its impurities and refines its good."
