Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Adiy told us, from Humayd, who said: Anas said, "You need not be surprised at a man’s deeds until you know what he will be sealed with at death, for a man may act badly for a stretch of his life or a period of his years, such that if he died upon it he would die in evil, but then he turns to righteous deeds, and he is sealed with that. And a servant may act righteously for a stretch of his life or a period of his years, such that if he died upon it he would die in good, but then he turns to evil deeds, and he is sealed with that." He said: Humayd once attributed this to the Prophet, then he refrained from doing so.
