Yazid told us: Humayd told us, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw phlegm on the qiblah wall of the mosque and scraped it off, and a look of severe displeasure was seen on his face because of it. He said, "When a servant stands to pray, he is conversing intimately with his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, in what is between him and the qiblah. So when one of you spits, let him spit to his left, or beneath his left foot, or let him do like this" — and he took the edge of his garment, spat into it, then rubbed part of it against the other.
