Abd al-Razzaq told us, he said: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Anas ibn Malik informed me, that some people among the Ansar said, on the day of Hunayn, when Allah granted His Messenger the wealth of Hawazin as spoils, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began to give men of Quraysh a hundred camels each: they said, "May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him -- he gives to Quraysh and leaves us, while our swords still drip with their blood!" Anas said: This saying of theirs was reported to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so he sent for the Ansar and gathered them in a leather tent, inviting no one else besides them. When they had gathered, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to them and said, "What is this talk that has reached me about you?" The Ansar said, "As for our men of judgment, they said nothing; but as for some of the younger ones among us, they said such-and-such," referring to what had been said. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "I give to men recently free of disbelief, to win their hearts" -- or he said, "to conciliate them -- do you not approve that other people go away with the wealth, while you return with the Messenger of Allah to your homes? For by Allah, what you will return with is better than what they will return with." They said, "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah, we are content." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them, "You will find after me a severe preference for others over you, so be patient until you meet Allah and His Messenger, for I am your forerunner at the Basin." Anas said: But we did not have patience.
