Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us: Thabit al-Bunani informed us, from Anas ibn Malik: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I was brought al-Buraq, a white animal, larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, placing its hoof at the extent of its gaze. So I rode it, and it carried me until I came to Jerusalem, and I tied the animal to the ring by which the prophets tie their mounts. Then I entered and prayed two rak'as in it. Then I went out, and Gabriel, peace be upon him, brought me a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk, and I chose the milk. Gabriel said: 'You have chosen the natural disposition.' Then we ascended to the lowest heaven, and Gabriel sought its opening; it was said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'Gabriel.' It was said: 'And who is with you?' He said: 'Muhammad.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'He has been sent for.' So it was opened for us, and there I was with Adam, who welcomed me and prayed good for me. Then we ascended to the second heaven, and the same exchange occurred, and there I was with the two maternal cousins, Yahya and 'Isa, who welcomed me both and prayed good for me. Then we ascended to the third heaven, and the same exchange occurred, and there I was with Joseph, peace be upon him, who had been given half of all beauty; he welcomed me and prayed good for me. Then we ascended to the fourth heaven, and the same exchange occurred, and there I was with Idris, who welcomed me and prayed good for me. Then he said: Allah, Mighty and Sublime, says, 'And We raised him to a high station.' Then we ascended to the fifth heaven, and the same exchange occurred, and there I was with Harun, who welcomed me and prayed good for me. Then we ascended to the sixth heaven, and the same exchange occurred, and there I was with Musa, peace be upon him, who welcomed me and prayed good for me. Then we ascended to the seventh heaven, and the same exchange occurred, and there I was with Ibrahim, peace and blessings be upon him, leaning against al-Bayt al-Ma'mur, which is entered every day by seventy thousand angels who never return to it again. Then he took me to Sidrat al-Muntaha, and its leaves were like elephants' ears and its fruit like large jars. When there covered it what covered it of the command of Allah, it changed, so that none of Allah's creation is able to describe its beauty. He said: Then Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed to me what He revealed, and enjoined upon me fifty prayers every day and night. So I descended until I reached Musa, and he said: 'What did your Lord enjoin upon your nation?' I said: 'Fifty prayers every day and night.' He said: 'Go back to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction, for your nation will not be able to bear that; I have already tried the Children of Israel and tested them.' So I went back to my Lord, Mighty and Sublime, and said: 'O Lord, lighten [the burden] for my nation.' So He took off five from me. Then I went back to Musa, and he said: 'What did you do?' I said: 'He took off five from me.' He said: 'Your nation will not be able to bear that; go back to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction.' So I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Musa, and He kept taking off five and five, until He said: 'O Muhammad, they are five prayers every day and night, for each prayer ten [rewards], so that makes fifty prayers; and whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, it is written for him as one good deed, and if he does it, it is written for him as ten; and whoever intends an evil deed but does not do it, nothing is written against him, and if he does it, it is written against him as a single evil deed.' So I descended until I reached Musa and told him, and he said: 'Go back to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction for your nation, for your nation will not be able to bear that.' So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'I went back to my Lord until I was ashamed.'"
