حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ نَفَرٍ فِيمَا سَلَفَ مِنْ النَّاسِ انْطَلَقُوا يَرْتَادُونَ لِأَهْلِهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ السَّمَاءُ فَدَخَلُوا غَارًا فَسَقَطَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَجَرٌ مُتَجَافٍ حَتَّى مَا يَرَوْنَ مِنْهُ حُصَاصَةً فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ قَدْ وَقَعَ الْحَجَرُ وَعَفَا الْأَثَرُ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ بِمَكَانِكُمْ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ بِأَوْثَقِ أَعْمَالِكُمْ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ قَدْ كَانَ لِي وَالِدَانِ فَكُنْتُ أَحْلِبُ لَهُمَا فِي إِنَائِهِمَا فَآتِيهُمَا فَإِذَا وَجَدْتُهُمَا رَاقِدَيْنِ قُمْتُ عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمَا كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ أَرُدَّ سِنَتَهُمَا فِي رُءُوسِهِمَا حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَا مَتَى اسْتَيْقَظَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ رَجَاءَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ عَذَابِكَ فَفَرِّجْ عَنَّا فَزَالَ ثُلُثُ الْحَجَرِ وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي اسْتَأْجَرْتُ أَجِيرًا عَلَى عَمَلٍ يَعْمَلُهُ فَأَتَانِي يَطْلُبُ أَجْرَهُ وَأَنَا غَضْبَانُ فَزَبَرْتُهُ فَانْطَلَقَ فَتَرَكَ أَجْرَهُ ذَلِكَ فَجَمَعْتُهُ وَثَمَّرْتُهُ حَتَّى كَانَ مِنْهُ كُلُّ الْمَالِ فَأَتَانِي يَطْلُبُ أَجْرَهُ فَدَفَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ لَمْ أُعْطِهِ إِلَّا أَجْرَهُ الْأَوَّلَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ رَجَاءَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ عَذَابِكَ فَفَرِّجْ عَنَّا قَالَ فَزَالَ ثُلُثَا الْحَجَرِ وَقَالَ الثَّالِثُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ أَعْجَبَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَجَعَلَ لَهَا جُعْلًا فَلَمَّا قَدَرَ عَلَيْهَا وَقَرَّ لَهَا نَفْسَهَا وَسَلَّمَ لَهَا جُعْلَهَا اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَعْلَمُ أَنِّي إِنَّمَا فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ رَجَاءَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَمَخَافَةَ عَذَابِكَ فَفَرِّجْ عَنَّا فَزَالَ الْحَجَرُ وَخَرَجُوا مَعَانِيقَ يَتَمَاشَوْنَ قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَحْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَالَ عَبْد اللَّهِ عَنْ أَنَسٍ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ ثَلَاثَةَ نَفَرٍ انْطَلَقُوا فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ قَالَ أَبِي وَلَمْ يَرْفَعْهُ.

Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us: Abu 'Awana narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: that three men among the people of old set out searching [for provision] for their families. Rain overtook them, so they entered a cave, and a great overhanging rock fell down upon them, so that they could see no opening from it. They said to one another: "The rock has fallen and no trace remains, and none knows of your place except Allah; so call upon Allah by your most trustworthy deeds." One of them said: "O Allah, if You know that I had two parents, and I used to milk for them into their vessel, and bring it to them; and if I found them asleep, I would stand at their heads, disliking to disturb their sleep, until they awoke, whenever they awoke—O Allah, if You know that I only did that seeking Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then relieve us of this." So a third of the rock moved away. The other said: "O Allah, if You know that I hired a laborer for work he was to do, and he came to me demanding his wage while I was angry, and I turned him away harshly, so he left, abandoning his wage; then I gathered it and made it grow, until it became an entire fortune; then he came to me demanding his wage, and I gave him all of it, though had I wished I could have given him only his original wage—O Allah, if You know that I only did that seeking Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then relieve us of this." So two-thirds of the rock moved away. The third said: "O Allah, if You know that a woman was dear to me, so I offered her a payment [for illicit relations], and when I had power over her, she yielded herself to me and surrendered her payment to her—O Allah, if You know that I only did that seeking Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then relieve us of this." So the rock moved away entirely, and they went out walking together. 'Abdullah said: Abu Bahr narrated to us: Abu 'Awana narrated to us, from Qatada—'Abdullah said—from Anas, and he mentioned the like of it. Bahz narrated to us: Abu 'Awana narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas: that three men set out, and he mentioned its meaning. My father said: and he did not attribute it directly [to the Prophet].
