Yunus narrated to us, Fulayh narrated to us, from Sa'id b. Ubayd b. al-Sabbaq, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Medina, we used to notify him about whoever among our dying was near death, and he would come to him before he died and attend him and ask forgiveness for him and wait for his death. He said: This sometimes detained him for a long time and became burdensome for him. He said: So we said, "It would be more considerate to the Messenger of Allah if we did not notify him about the dying person until he had died." He said: So when one of us died, we would notify him of it, and he would come to the family and ask forgiveness for him and pray over him. Then if he wished to attend, he would wait for its attendance, and if he wished to leave, he would leave. He said: We continued in that manner for another stage. He said: Then we said, "It would be more considerate to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, if we carried our dead to his house and did not trouble him or make him go out." He said: So we did that, and that became the practice.
