Muhammad ibn Ubayd told us: Suwayd ibn Najih told us, from Yazid al-Faqir, who said: I said to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, "Among us are men who are the best of us in reciting the Qur'an, the most frequent of us in prayer, the most devoted of us in maintaining family ties, and the most frequent of us in fasting - yet they have risen against us with their swords." Abu Sa'id said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "A people will emerge who recite the Qur'an, but it will not pass beyond their throats; they will pass out of the religion just as an arrow passes through its game."
