Abu Mu'awiyah told us, Al-A'mash told us, from Abu Salih, from Abu Sa'id — or from Abu Hurayrah, al-A'mash was uncertain — who said: When the expedition of Tabuk took place, hunger afflicted the people, and they said: "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would give us permission, we would slaughter our camels used for watering and eat and grease ourselves with their fat." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them: "Do so." Then Umar came and said: "O Messenger of Allah, if they do that, the mounts will become few. Rather, call for what remains of their provisions, then invoke a blessing upon it — perhaps Allah will place abundance in that." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called for a leather mat and spread it out, then called for what remained of their provisions. A man would come with a handful of corn, another with a handful of dates, another with a piece of bread, until a small quantity had gathered on the mat. Then he invoked a blessing upon it, and said to them: "Take it in your containers." They took it in their containers until they left no vessel in the army without filling it, and they ate until they were satisfied, with some left over. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah — no servant meets Allah with these, without doubt, but that Paradise will not be withheld from him."
