Yahya ibn Ya'mur narrates: The first to speak about Divine decree in Basrah was Ma'bad al-Juhani. I and Humayd ibn Hadrat 'Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari set out for Hajj or 'Umrah and said: If only we could meet one of the Companions of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) so we could ask him about what these people say regarding Divine decree. Allah granted us to meet Hadrat 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) as he was entering the mosque. My companion and I drew close to him from both sides. I thought my companion would leave the speaking to me, so I said: Abu Hadrat 'Abd al-Rahman! Some people have appeared among us who recite the Quran and delve into the subtleties of knowledge. They claim there is no Divine decree and that everything is new. He replied: When you meet those people, tell them that I am free of them and they are free of me. By the One by Whom 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar swears, if one of them possessed gold the size of Mount Uhud and spent it all, Allah would not accept it from him until he believes in Divine decree. Then he said: My father, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him), narrated to me: We were with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) when a man appeared before us whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black. No trace of travel could be seen upon him and none of us recognized him. He sat before the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), placed his knees against the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)'s knees, put his palms upon the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)'s thighs, and said: O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: Islam is to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), to establish the prayer, to pay the Zakah, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way thereto. He said: You have spoken the truth. We marveled that he asked him and then confirmed him! He then said: Tell me about faith. He stated: To believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in Divine decree — both the good and the evil of it. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he said: Tell me about ihsan (spiritual excellence). He stated: To worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you. He said: Tell me about the Hour. He stated: The one being asked about it knows no more than the questioner. He said: Then tell me of its signs. He stated: That the slave-girl shall give birth to her mistress, and that barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds shall compete in constructing tall buildings. Then the man departed. After three days, the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: O 'Umar! Do you know who the questioner was? I submitted: Allah and His Messenger know best. He stated: That was Jibril; he came to teach you your religion.

یحییٰ بن یعمر فرماتے ہیں: سب سے پہلے بصرہ میں تقدیر کے بارے میں بات کرنے والے معبد جہنی تھے۔ میں اور حمید بن عبدالرحمن حمیری حج یا عمرے کے لیے نکلے تو ہم نے کہا: کاش ہمیں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کا کوئی صحابی مل جائے تو ان سے پوچھیں کہ یہ لوگ تقدیر کے بارے میں کیا کہتے ہیں۔ اللہ نے ہمیں حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے ملا دیا جو مسجد میں داخل ہو رہے تھے۔ میں اور میرے ساتھی دونوں طرف سے ان کے قریب ہوئے۔ مجھے لگا میرا ساتھی بات مجھ پر چھوڑ دے گا، میں نے عرض کیا: ابوعبدالرحمن! ہمارے ہاں کچھ لوگ ظاہر ہوئے ہیں جو قرآن پڑھتے ہیں اور علم کی باریکیوں میں غور کرتے ہیں، وہ دعویٰ کرتے ہیں کہ تقدیر نہیں ہے اور ہر معاملہ نیا ہے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: جب تم ان سے ملو تو انہیں بتاؤ کہ میں ان سے بری ہوں اور وہ مجھ سے بری ہیں۔ اس ذات کی قسم جس کی حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر قسم کھاتے ہیں! اگر ان میں سے کسی کے پاس اُحد پہاڑ جتنا سونا ہو اور وہ اسے خرچ کرے تو اللہ اسے قبول نہ فرمائے جب تک وہ تقدیر پر ایمان نہ لائے۔ پھر فرمایا: مجھے میرے والد حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے حدیث بیان فرمائی: ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس تھے کہ ایک شخص ہمارے سامنے آیا جس کے کپڑے نہایت سفید اور بال نہایت سیاہ تھے، اس پر سفر کا کوئی اثر نظر نہ آتا تھا اور ہم میں سے کوئی اسے نہیں جانتا تھا۔ وہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس بیٹھ گیا، اپنے گھٹنے آپ کے گھٹنوں سے ملائے اور اپنی ہتھیلیاں آپ کی رانوں پر رکھیں اور عرض کیا: اے محمد! مجھے اسلام کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: اسلام یہ ہے کہ تم گواہی دو کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد اللہ کے رسول ہیں، نماز قائم کرو، زکوٰۃ ادا کرو، رمضان کے روزے رکھو، اور اگر استطاعت ہو تو بیت اللہ کا حج کرو۔ اس نے کہا: آپ نے سچ فرمایا۔ ہمیں تعجب ہوا کہ وہ خود سوال کرتا ہے اور خود ہی تصدیق کرتا ہے! پھر عرض کیا: مجھے ایمان کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ فرمایا: اللہ پر، اس کے فرشتوں پر، اس کی کتابوں پر، اس کے رسولوں پر، آخرت کے دن پر ایمان لاؤ اور تقدیر پر ایمان لاؤ چاہے اچھی ہو یا بری۔ اس نے کہا: آپ نے سچ فرمایا۔ پھر عرض کیا: مجھے احسان کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ فرمایا: اللہ کی عبادت ایسے کرو گویا تم اسے دیکھ رہے ہو، اگر تم اسے نہ دیکھ سکو تو (جان لو کہ) وہ تمہیں دیکھ رہا ہے۔ عرض کیا: مجھے قیامت کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ فرمایا: اس بارے میں جس سے سوال کیا جا رہا ہے وہ سائل سے زیادہ نہیں جانتا۔ عرض کیا: تو اس کی نشانیاں بتائیے۔ فرمایا: لونڈی اپنی مالکہ کو جنے اور ننگے پاؤں، ننگے بدن، تنگ دست، بکریوں کے چرواہے عمارتوں میں اونچائی کرنے لگیں۔ پھر وہ شخص چلا گیا۔ تین دن بعد آپ نے فرمایا: اے عمر! کیا تم جانتے ہو سوال کرنے والا کون تھا؟ میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں۔ فرمایا: وہ جبریل تھے، تمہیں تمہارا دین سکھانے آئے تھے۔
