Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:9819a حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا أَبُو جَنَابٍ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي حَيَّةَ الْكَلْبِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَوْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ الْأَسْوَدَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ هَلْ كَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ يُفَضِّلُ عَمَلًا عَلَى عَمَلٍ؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّهَا إِلَى اللهِ وَأَقْرَبُهَا؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمُّ مَاذَا عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» وَلَوِ اسْ��َزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
English Translation
Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, from Abu Nu'aym, from Abu Janab Yahya ibn Abi Hayyah al-Kalbi who said: I heard Awn ibn Abdullah say: I asked al-Aswad ibn Yazid: 'Did Ibn Mas'ud prefer any deed over another?' He said: 'Yes, I asked Ibn Mas'ud and he said: I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are most beloved to Allah and closest to Him? He said: Prayer at its time. I said: Then what after that? He said: Then dutifulness to parents. I said: Then what after that? He said: Jihad in the cause of Allah.' And had I asked him for more, he would have given me more.
