أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ الْقَطَّانُ بِبَغْدَادَ أنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ دُرُسْتَوَيْهِ نا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ نا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ نا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ جَلَسْتُ إِلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى وَأَصْحَابُهُ يُعَظِّمُونَهُ كَأَنَّهُ أَمِيرٌ فَذَكَرُوا آخِرَ الْأَجَلَيْنِ فَذَكَرْتُ حَدِيثَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ فِي سُبَيْعَةَ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ فَغَمَزَ إِلِيَّ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِهِ فَفَطِنْتُ فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي لَحَرِيصٌ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ إِنْ كَذَبْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ وَهُوَ بِنَاحِيَةِ الْكُوفَةِ قَالَ فَاسْتَحَى وَقَالَ وَلَكِنَّ عَمَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ وَلَمْ أَكُنْ سَمِعْتُ فِيهِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ شَيْئًا قَالَ فَقُمْتُ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا عَطِيَّةَ مَالِكَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَذَهَبَ يُحَدِّثُنِي حَدِيثَ سُبَيْعَةَ قُلْتُ إِنِّي لَسْتُ عَنْ هَذَا أَسْأَلُكَ وَلَكِنْ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ فِيهِ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ كُنَّا مَعَ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَسَأَلْنَا عَنْهَا فَقَالَ
English Translation
Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn informed us, from Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Durustawayh, from Ya'qub ibn Sufyan, from Sulayman ibn Harb, from Hammad, from Ayyub, from Muhammad ibn Sirin who said: I sat with Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla while his companions were honoring him as if he were a commander. They mentioned the longer of the two waiting periods, so I mentioned the hadith of Abdullah ibn Utbah about Subay'ah bint al-Harith. Some of his companions signaled to me, and I noticed it. I said: 'I would indeed be eager to lie if I lied about Abdullah ibn Utbah while he is in the outskirts of Kufa.' He became embarrassed and said: 'But his uncle did not used to say that.' I had not heard anything from Abdullah about it. So I got up and met Abu Atiyyah Malik ibn al-Harith and asked him. He began to narrate the hadith of Subay'ah. I said: 'I am not asking about that, but did you hear anything from Abdullah about it?' He said: 'Yes, we were with Abdullah and we asked him about it, and he said (that her term ends when she delivers).'
