English Translation
Abu Rafi', the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), narrated: I was a slave of al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib. I had accepted Islam, as had Umm al-Fadl, and al-'Abbas had accepted Islam but was concealing it out of fear of his people. Abu Lahab had stayed behind from Badr and sent in his place al-'As ibn Hisham, who owed him a debt. He said: "Spare me this expedition, and I will forgive your debt." He did so. When the news came and Allah humiliated Abu Lahab, I was a weak man carving these cups in a chamber. The wicked Abu Lahab came dragging his feet and sat at the tent peg of the chamber with his back to my back. The people said: "This is Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith." Abu Lahab said: "Come here, O nephew." Abu Sufyan came and sat by him, and people gathered around them. Abu Lahab said: "O nephew, how did matters go for the people?" He said: "Nothing — by Allah, we only met them and gave them our backs. They killed us however they wished and took us captive however they wished. But by Allah, I do not blame the people." He said: "Why?" He said: "I saw white men on piebald horses — by Allah, nothing could withstand them and nothing could stand before them." I lifted the tent flap and said: "Those, by Allah, are the angels!" Abu Lahab raised his hand and struck my face. I sprang at him, but he overpowered me and threw me to the ground. Umm al-Fadl stood up, took a tent pole, and struck him on the head, leaving a deep gash, saying: "O enemy of Allah, did you think him weak because his master is absent?" He stood up humiliated. By Allah, he lived only seven nights before Allah struck him with the plague pustule, which killed him. His two sons left him for two or three nights without burying him until he began to stink. A man of Quraysh said to his sons: "Are you not ashamed that your father has begun to stink in his house?" They said: "We fear this sore." The Quraysh feared the pustule plague as they feared the plague. A man said: "Let us go, and I will help you." By Allah, they did not wash him except by pouring water on him from a distance, then they carried him and threw him on the outskirts of Makkah against a wall and cast stones upon him.
