Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:868 حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَهْدَمِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْغِفَارِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ قَالَ لِي أُهْبَانُ بْنُ صَيْفِيٍّ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «يَا أُهْبَانُ أَمَا إِنَّكَ إِنْ بَقِيتَ بَعْدِي فَسَتَرَى فِي أَصْحَابِي اخْتِلَافًا فَإِنْ بَقِيتَ إِلَى ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ فَاجْعَلْ سَيْفَكَ مِنْ عَرَاجِينَ» قَالَ فَجَعَلْتُ سَيْفِي مِنْ عَرَاجِينَ فَأَتَانِي عَلِيٌّ ؓ فَأَخَذَ بِعِضَادَتَيِ الْبَابِ ثُمَّ سَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا أُهْبَانُ أَلَا تَخْرُجُ؟ فَقُلْتُ بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ أَوْصَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ تَقَدَّمَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ شَكَّ ابْنُ زَهْدَمٍ فَقَالَ «يَا أُهْبَانُ أَمَا إِنَّكَ إِنْ بَقِيتَ بَعْدِي فَسَتَرَى فِي أَصْحَابِي اخْتِلَافًا فَإِنْ بَقِيتَ إِلَى ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ فَاجْعَلْ سَيْفَكَ مِنْ عَرَاجِينَ» فَأَخْرَجْتُ إِلَيْهِ سَيْفِي فَوَلَّى عَلِيٌّ ؓ
English Translation
Uhban ibn Sayfi narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "O Uhban, if you live after me, you will see disagreement among my companions. If you live to see that day, make your sword from palm stalks." He said: So I made my sword from palm stalks. Then 'Ali came to me and held onto the doorframe, greeted me, and said: "O Uhban, will you not come out?" I said: "May my father and mother be your ransom, O Abu al-Hasan. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me — or commanded me — or advised me — or instructed me: 'O Uhban, if you live after me, you will see disagreement among my companions. If you live to see that day, make your sword from palm stalks.'" So I showed him my sword, and 'Ali turned away.
