Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:8836 حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ ابْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ سَارَ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ إِلَى الْكُوفَةِ حِينَ اسْتُخْلِفَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ §عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ مَاتَ فَلَمْ نَرَ نَشِيجًا أَكْثَرَ مِنْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَإِنَّا اجْتَمَعْنَا أَصْحَابَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَلَمْ نَأْلُ عَنْ خَيْرِنَا ذَا فُوقٍ فَبَايَعْنَاهُ فَبَايِعُوا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ»
English Translation
Ibn Mas'ud traveled from Madinah to Kufa when Uthman ibn Affan was appointed caliph. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: 'As for what follows: The Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab, has died, and we have never seen weeping more profuse than on that day. We, the Companions of Muhammad, gathered and spared no effort in choosing the best among us, the most pre-eminent. So pledge allegiance to the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman ibn Affan.'
