Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:8522a حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ أَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ حَمَّادِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّهُ يَجِيءُ كُلَّ يَوْمِ خَمِيسٍ يَقُومُ قَائِمًا لَا يَجْلِسُ فَيَقُولُ لَا تَفْتِنُوا النَّاسَ فَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ الضَّعِيفَ وَالْكَبِيرَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ فَيَقُولُ هُمَا اثْنَانِ وَأَحْسَنُ الْهَدْيِ هَدْيُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَصْدَقُ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابُ اللهِ وَشَرُّ الْأُمُورِ مُحْدَثَاتُهَا وَكُلُّ مُحْدَثٍ ضَلَالَةٌ إِنَّ الشَّقِيَّ مَنْ شَقِيَ فِي بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ وَإِنَّ السَّعِيدَ مَنْ وُعِظَ بِغَيْرِهِ أَلَا فَلَا يَطُولَنَّ عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَمَدُ وَلَا يُلْهِيَنَّكُمُ الْأَمَلُ فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَا هُوَ آتٍ قَرِيبٌ وَإِنَّمَا بَعِيدٌ مَا لَيْسَ آتِيًا وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِرَارِ النَّاسِ تَطَاوَلَ النَّهَارَ خِيفَةَ اللَّيْلِ فَإِنَّ قَتْلَ الْمُؤْمِنِ كُفْرٌ وَإِنَّ سِبَابَهُ فُسُوقٌ وَلَا يَحِلُّ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ أَخَاهُ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ أَلَا إِنَّ شِرَارَ الرَّوَايَا الْكَذِبُ وَإِنَّهُ لَا يَصْلُحُ مِنَ الْكَذِبِ جِدٌّ وَلَا هَزْلٌ وَلَا أَنْ يَعِدَ الرَّجُلُ صَبِيَّهُ وَلَا يُنْجِزُهُ أَلَا وَإِنَّ الْكَذِبَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْفُجُورِ وَإِنَّ الْفُجُورَ يَهْدِي إِلَى النَّارِ وَإِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْبِرِّ وَإِنَّ الْبِرَّ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ وَإِنَّ الصَّادِقَ يُقَالُ لَهُ صَدَقَ وَبَرَّ وَإِنَّ الْكَاذِبَ يُقَالُ لَهُ كَذَبَ وَفَجَرَ
English Translation
Ibn Mas'ud used to come every Thursday, stand without sitting, and say: "Do not burden the people, for among them are the weak, the elderly, and those with needs." Then he would say: "There are only two things. The best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad, and the truest speech is the Book of Allah. The worst of affairs are newly-invented ones, and every innovation is misguidance. The wretched one is he who was wretched in his mother's womb, and the fortunate one is he who learns from others. Do not let the passage of time make you complacent, and do not let hope distract you, for everything that is coming is near, and what is far is that which is not coming. Among the worst of people is one who dreads the length of the day out of fear of the night. Killing a believer is disbelief, and reviling him is wickedness. It is not lawful for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three days. The worst of tales are lies. Nothing is proper from lying — neither seriousness nor jest, nor that a man promises his child something and does not fulfill it. Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. The truthful one is told: 'He has been truthful and righteous,' and the liar is told: 'He has lied and been wicked.'"
