English Translation
The people of Basra fought at Nahawand and the people of Kufa reinforced them under the command of Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him). They were victorious, and the people of Basra wanted to not share the spoils with the people of Kufa. A man from Banu Tamim or Banu Utarid said: 'O you crop-eared slave, do you want to share in our spoils?' — his ear had been cut in battle alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said: 'You have insulted the better of my two ears.' He wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he wrote back: 'The spoils belong to whoever witnessed the battle.'
