English Translation
Abu Umamah said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said one day: 'Who will give the pledge of allegiance?' Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, said: 'On what shall we pledge, have we not already pledged to you once, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'That you will not ask anyone for anything, and Paradise will be yours.' Thawban said: 'What is the reward for that, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Paradise.' So Thawban gave the pledge.' Abu Umamah said: 'I saw him in Makkah in the most crowded of gatherings - his whip would fall while he was riding, and sometimes it would fall on a man's shoulder, and the man would take it and offer it to him, but he would not take it, and would instead dismount and pick it up himself.'"
