English Translation
Ibn 'Abbas narrated that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was severely ill, and 'A'ishah and Hafsah were with him, 'Ali entered. When the Prophet saw him, he raised his head and said: "Come close to me." 'Ali leaned against him and stayed until the Prophet passed away. When he died, 'Ali closed the door. Al-'Abbas came with the sons of 'Abd al-Muttalib. 'Ali began saying: "May my father be your ransom; you were pure alive and pure in death," and a fragrance arose the like of which they had never experienced. 'Ali said: "Let al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas enter." The Ansar said: "We adjure you by Allah for our share regarding the Messenger of Allah." So they admitted a man called Aws ibn Khawli carrying a jar. They heard a voice in the house: "Do not undress the Messenger of Allah; wash him as he is in his garment." So 'Ali washed him, putting his hand under the garment, while al-Fadl held the cloth, and the Ansari carried the water, and on 'Ali's hand was a cloth.
