Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:5932 حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ ثنا خَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ الْقَاضِي ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالُوا ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ كَانَ قِتَالٌ بَيْنَ بَنِي عَمْرِو بْنِ عَوْفِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ثُمَّ أَتَاهُمْ لِيُصْلِحَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَقَالَ «يَا بِلَالُ إِنْ حَضَرَتِ الْعَصْرُ وَلَمْ آتِكَ فَمُرْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ» فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتْهُ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ أَذَّنَ وَأَقَامَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَتَقَدَّمَ قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ فِي الصَّلَاةِ فَشَقَّ بِالنَّاسِ حَتَّى قَامَ خَلْفَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فِي الصَّفِّ الَّذِي يَلِيهِ وَصَفَّحَ الْقَوْمُ فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِذَا دَخَلَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ لَمْ يَلْتَفِتْ حَتَّى يَفْرُغَ فَلَمَّا رَأَى التَّصْفِيحَ لَا يُمْسِكُ عَنْهُ الْتَفَتَ فَرَأَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَلْفَهُ فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنِ امْضِهِ وَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا قَالَ فَلَبِثَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ هُنَيْهَةً فَحَمِدَ اللهَ عَلَى قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ثُمَّ مَشَى الْقَهْقَرَى فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ تَقَدَّمَ فَصَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ قَالَ «يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ أَوْمَأْتُ إِلَيْكَ أَنْ لَا تَكُونَ مَضَيْتَ؟» قَالَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لِابْنِ أَبِي قُحَافَةَ أَنْ يَؤُمَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ وَقَالَ لِلْقَوْمِ «إِذَا رَابَكُمْ أَمَرٌ فَلْيُسَبِّحِ الرِّجَالُ ولِتُصَفِّقِ النِّسَاءُ» وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ عَارِمٍ
English Translation
Sahl ibn Sa'd said: There was fighting between Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf. This reached the Prophet (peace be upon him). He prayed Dhuhr, then went to them to reconcile between them. He said: "O Bilal, if the 'Asr prayer comes and I have not returned, tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." When the 'Asr prayer came, Bilal called the adhan and iqamah, then told Abu Bakr to step forward. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came while Abu Bakr was in the prayer. He passed through the people until he stood behind Abu Bakr in the row behind him. The people clapped. Abu Bakr, when he entered prayer, would not turn until he finished. But when he saw the clapping would not stop, he turned and saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) behind him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gestured to him to continue. Abu Bakr paused a moment, praised Allah for the Prophet's words, then walked backward. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw this, he stepped forward and prayed with the people. When he finished the prayer, he said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from continuing when I gestured to you?" He said: "It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." Then he said to the people: "When something troubles you, let the men say SubhanAllah and let the women clap."
